Origins: Blue Meanie can be a slightly confusing name in the mushroom world because it is used for more than one mushroom. This Blue Meanie is the Psilocybe cubensis variety and shouldn’t be confused with Panaeolus cyanescens, another psychedelic mushroom commonly known by the same nickname. The cubensis Blue Meanie has circulated as a cultivated variety for years, developing its own following and a reputation for a lively psychedelic character.

Characteristics: Blue Meanie mushrooms have a fairly classic cubensis appearance, typically producing golden to caramel-brown caps on pale, relatively slender stems. They’re particularly known for noticeable blue bruising, which can appear along the stems and other areas after handling and gives the variety’s memorable name an especially fitting feel. Individual fruits may be smaller than some of today’s chunky PE-style varieties, but Blue Meanie tends to maintain that familiar old-school mushroom appearance.
