Origins: Golden Teacher is one of the best-known names in the mushroom world, but its exact beginnings are surprisingly mysterious. The variety rose to prominence in the 1980s, and while plenty of stories about its origins have circulated since then, there’s no single well-documented history everyone agrees on. Decades later, Golden Teacher remains a classic and one of the most recognizable Psilocybe cubensis varieties around.

Characteristics: Golden Teachers get their name from their distinctive golden to caramel-coloured caps, which sit atop long, pale stems. The caps can range from rounded to more broadly opened as the mushrooms mature, often with a slightly darker centre. Once dried, their warm golden colouring and classic mushroom shape still make them fairly easy to recognize.

Potency and Effects: Golden Teacher has earned its reputation as a classic for its balanced, introspective character. Users often describe visual changes, an uplifted mood, wandering or philosophical thoughts, and a heightened sense of connection to nature and their surroundings. The variety is especially well known for its spiritual side, with experiences commonly described as reflective, meaningful, or perspective-shifting. That combination has made Golden Teacher a long-time favourite among both newer mushroom users and seasoned psychonauts.

Starter dose: 0.5–1.0 grams

For experienced users, this may be a relatively small amount. For someone unfamiliar with Golden Teachers or psilocybin mushrooms, a smaller amount provides an opportunity to become familiar with their effects.

Use in a safe, supervised setting until you are familiar with how psilocybin affects you.
